Keepsakes and Sentimental Items

The questions I’ve suggested you ask when choosing what stays and what goes typically don’t work well when going through your sentimental things. After all, we’re inclined to keep these items even if we have no use for them, if they’re broken beyond repair, or if their style no longer suits us. When we look at these items, a special memory or a whole set of special memories often come to mind. De-owning a sentimental item can feel as if we’re losing a part of our self. It’s a good idea not to begin your de-cluttering journey with these items. Even after you’ve made a successful first pass through your fantasy-self things and perfectly good items, meeting up with your keepsakes so that you can thin them out might feel like walking into a wall.

With marriage, motherhood, and moving due to the military, I had grown and so had my family. Possessions I once held dear started to loosen their grip as the meaning behind the keepsake moved from the item to my heart. I didn’t need to hold on to my grandparents’ dining hutch to remember and honor them. And I discovered that their love and legacies were never in their dining hutch anyway; they were always in their characters. It is possible to peel away the layer of heavy sentimental items that weighs you down. Through the years, I learned how to simply let go of things that were too heavy to hold as I moved forward.
